You don’t have to be the first if you are the best

Just something to think about when you are deciding to build that new product.

  • Bill Gates unveiled the Tablet PC in 2000 at COMDEX (10 years before the iPad)
  • Audio Highway announced their Listen Up MP3 player in 1996 (5 years before the first iPod)
  • The GUI (Graphical User Interface) was actually first developed by Xerox, not Microsoft Windows or Apple
  • Screenr wasn’t the first web based screen recorder

It really doesn’t matter if you are first to market.  Often times it makes it easier if someone goes before you because you can learn from their mistakes, learn what you can do better, then execute.

Hi Dave,
Overall I love your blog (I’m a happy subscriber), but this post comes across as a shameless plug for Screenr as the “best”… It’s not too far from just posting “Screenr is the best web based screen recorder!”
Apart from that, I’d say this post reminds me of Seth Godin’s blog. =) (Which many folks would take as a compliment.)

Hey Andy,

That is funny, that was definitely not my intention. I actually had all Apple examples up originally (iPad, iPod, and left off iPhone) but changed it because it would seem like I was just a shill for Apple (which is partially correct). I threw in Screenr because about 3 months before we released Screenr a screencasting tool that integrated with Twitter was released that was very, very close in functionality, and after freaking out about the fact that we weren’t first to market with this, we realized that it didn’t matter if we were first if we thought we could execute better. So I thought by mentioning Screenr it would bring the idea home a bit.

I appreciate the feedback.
