Incorporating YouTube videos into your training

by Dave Mozealous on November 17, 2008

Ever found a really good YouTube video that you want to incorporate in your training, but weren’t sure how you go about using it?

There are a couple of ways that you can use YouTube videos in your training:

Using Web Objects in Articulate Presenter

In Articulate Presenter we allow you to insert Web Objects on a slide.  From the Articulate Presenter Help file:

A Web Object, simply put, is any content that can be contained in a Web page. Web Objects can be used for inserting existing Web pages into your presentation, thereby allowing you to leverage previously created content.

For more information on adding a Web Object to your Presentation, view the help topic on the subject.

Ok, that is one way to do it, but there are a couple of drawbacks to this method:

  • Won’t appear totally seemless.  You will basically be looking at a YouTube page inside of Articulate Presenter, and maybe you just want the video itself.
  • You can’t use web objects in Engage or Quizmaker.

Download the source video from YouTube and use that

An alternative to the Web Object method is to download the source video from YouTube, and then use the video itself.  This option gives you more flexibilty to control the positioning, make it appear more seemeless (without the rest of the YouTube page), and will allow you to edit the video if you need to remove parts using a video editing tool such as the Articulate Video Encoder.

There is a website, www.keepvid.com that will allow you to download either the YouTube FLV, or the MP4 file of the video.

To do this:

  1. Go to YouTube and find the video you want
  2. Copy the URL for the video (the page address)
  3. Go to Keepvid.com and enter the YouTube URL for the video
  4. Click Download

It will give you links to download the FLV for the video, and the MP4 video.  The MP4 files is what you will want to use if you would like to edit the video in a video editor, such as the Articulate Video Encoder.  Then you will just need to publish this video as FLV from your video editing tool.

Once you have the FLV you can then insert the FLV in Presenter, Engage or Quizmaker.

Drawbacks to this method:

  • Not exactly sure on licensing restrictions here, YouTube might, and probably does not want you to do this.

In the presentation I linked below, I downloaded the Michael Jackson thriller video in MP4 format from Keepvid.com/YouTube, then edited the video with the Articulate Video Encoder, and then incorporated it in my Articulate Presenter presentation.  It is on the slide with the TV.

Videos offer a change from the usual training methods and accepted by trainees most of the time. YouTube is a great resource with a lot of videos for a number of jobs, right from accounts to combat.
