Anti-Virus programs suck

by Dave Mozealous on November 12, 2008

Just read this article on the Yahoo tech site about AVG anti-virus:

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/nf/20081111/tc_nf/62966

Here is a snipit from the article:

An update for the AVG 8 antivirus software for Windows 2000, XP and Vista released Saturday mistakenly warned that the Windows systemfile user32.dll was a Trojan horse. The problem affected the Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish versions.

AVG then proceeded to delete the user32.dll file.  The problem here is that the user32.dll file is a system file that is necessary for the Operating System to run, so by deleting it, they ruin someones computer.  Obviously it is pretty crappy that a program you are using to protect your computer from viruses causes problems as bad as or worse than the viruses it is protecting you from.

The reason why I am posting this is it is becoming more and more common that Anti-virus programs are flagging good files and bad, and doing things like this.  Since we released Studio ’09 I have had to contact about half a dozen anti-virus programs (most of the free variety) that flag our programs as viruses, even though they are not viruses.

False positives by anti-virus and anti-spam can cause really severe problems, you would think they would spend as much time trying to prevent false positives as they would preventing viruses.  Hopefully if they aren’t already, they will start.

BitDefender is the WORST!!! It is extremely outdated and Advanced SystemCare finds more than it. WTF!

I’m 15, and my dad forced me to have BitDefender, it takes almost an hour to install and set up. Takes lots of CPU resources and overlooks EVERY SINGLE MALICIOUS FILE ON YOUR SYSTEM! DO NOT GET BITDEFENDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get Eset Nod32, it’s THE BEST! Don’t get anything else!
