Great article! Very useful, we chose Certpoint as our LMS provider and we could not be happier; your article really helped narrow down what we were looking for.

Excellent article. It is great to get a realistic description of strengths and weaknesses of LMS approaches.

Great article Dave! We have been testing the Infor Talent Management system and are not sure if it will ever move into production. Your article addresses some of the important points to consider. I do stress having a "hitlist" of "show stoppers" and have a demo of these points prior to a purchase. Often, a sales rep sometimes assumes these features exist and you are barraged with a laundry list of features, some of which will never be required . Great article - thanks again!

Thanks!! This was great info as I start my research. I have been given the task of looking into setting on line training for my company of three with VERY limited funding and NO IT personnel. This was great information to review as I begin my research and my limited knowledge of the topic. LMS vs. Open Source... Thanks!

Nice post. Very relevant.

One thing I'll add is this: if you have course content that takes up a lot of bandwidth (like multimedia training courses will do), you should give some thought to how the LMS (and your IT infrastructure) will handle this extra bandwidth load. If you are a multi-site company this could be a real problem if the LMS is set up to only access a single file repository.

Hi Yannick,

Yeah, I totally agree on the easiness of the use of the system, and tried to cover that in item number 4. Many Learning Management Systems I have used have been excessively complicated, so I agree it is an area that could be greatly improved.

Hi there,

Nice article. In practice, even though SCORM 2004 was an improvement to SCORM 1.2, it also brings a certain set of flaws (most new concepts are almost never used by SCORM 2004 content even if they are packaged this way).
Open Source LMSes have more difficulties to get compliance too, as they tend to evolve faster and are less focused on commercial recognition, although most of them have an acceptable SCORM 1.2 support and some (mostly Ilias) implement SCORM 2004 too.

One thing that is missing from your 11 things though is the usability, or the easiness to use the system. An LMS is one of the tools that have usability as a top requirement. You want to learn a specific topic, you don't want to have to learn how to use the tool before you get to the topic. This is one aspect in which a lot of LMS tools fail. As a professional, I have had a series of situations where we had to migrate content from one platform to another because the first one was completely abandoned as the users felt it was too complicated to get to their courses.

Interesting article, nevertheless.
